Happy Halloween!
Halloween is right around the corner. This month, I've been managing Halloween posts for FlamesRising.com and had the chance to write some horror film articles for the free movie website Crackle.com. For online marketing, I wrote an article about holiday promotions for a local web development firm.
To keep my fiction writing skills fresh, I've been working on short stories and flash fiction for different contests. I'm happy to announce that one of my stories entitled, "The Saint, the Pickpocket and the Manticore," will be published in an upcoming anthology from Pill Hill Press.
In the category of shameless self-promotion, another author named Paul Jessup interviewed me for his blog about "The Queen of Crows" and I will be in Las Vegas as a guest for Neoncon.
A lot of other writers have asked me if I was going to sign up for NaNoWriMo. While I'm not working on a new novel for National Novel Writing Month, I know several writers who are. Hope you will consider participating this year! If you are - good luck!
"Scary" Social Media?
If you've been paying attention to social media, there's a lot of good and bad that can come out of sharing your thoughts. People are getting sued over Tweets, they're getting fired over Facebook and recently, a writer was asked to step down as guest-of-honor at a convention for comments she made on LiveJournal. If someone can copy and paste what you write; it's public.
Remember, the terms and conditions for the sites we share content on are always changing. I've talked to several HR specialists that factor in a potential employee's online presence when they're reviewing resumes.
Unfortunately, the law still hasn't caught up to the internet yet. Until then, it might be a good idea to keep that in mind before you rant.
Tip to Avoid Fraudulent Freelance Jobs
Several freelance and telecommuting job postings are little more than scams designed to get you to work for free or grab your personal data.
To find out whether or not a company is fraudulent, search for [company name] plus the word "scam," "fraud" or "review." You can also research some companies, publishers and agents via Writer Beware.
Recipe Tip! It's in the Sauce
I took a jar of honey dijon mustard and blended it with half a pint of heavy cream and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. You can serve this sauce hot or cold. Yum!
